Cultivating Asian American Spiritual Formation: Contemplative Knowing and the Stages of Faith
                                                           with Dr. Carrie Myers

Picture
Date: Tuesday, September 27, 2022

Location: 6:00-7:30PM Cooper Room, Erdman Center, 20 Library Place, Princeton, NJ

Format: Hybrid event: CAAC will host Dr. Carrie Myers and PTS students in person in the Cooper Room, a virtual audience will also participate through the Airmeet digital platform

Free registration for virtual attendance

What are the stages of Christian faith? How do these stages of faith manifest in and impact us as Asian American Christians and ministry leaders? What kind of spiritual and prayer life supports our growth as faith practitioners and leaders? Dr. Myers will discuss Asian American spiritual formation through a model of spiritual development emphasizing the stages of faith and contemplative prayer practices. Participants will be invited to consider their own stage(s) of faith and their formation as an Asian-American Christian and to experience a short contemplative prayer exercise.

Among questions we will consider:

  • How can understanding the stages of Christian faith help you make sense of your spiritual journey, identify the factors that keep you from growing, and help you move towards inner freedom and the fullness of who God has created you to be?
  • How can churches and spiritual leaders help and hinder faith progression? How can ministry leaders be present to others at their stage of faith?
  • Specifically, how do Ignatian and other contemplative prayer practices, including spiritual direction, help us move from an intellectual understanding to a transformational experience of God known as “contemplative knowing”? How can they offer us a “spirituality for solidarity” with the poor and marginalized, in accordance with the redemptive mission of Christ?

Dr. Carrie Myers Bio
With a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from New York University, Dr. Myers has worked on the faculties of NYU, Barnard College, Hunter College, and City Seminary of New York. She trained in both Spiritual Direction and Ignatian Accompaniment at The School of Sustainable Faith and holds certificates in Urban Ministry and Arts Ministry. She is a spiritual director and worship leader at Vineyard One NYC, a small church whose mission is to "creatively carry out the work of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit." She and Ryan, Vineyard One's pastor, have been married for over 20 years and have three children. Carrie is also a co-founder of the Stillness Collective, a group of spiritual directors who help busy people create space for stillness, solitude, and renewal. As a Spiritual Director, she finds joy and purpose in helping others experience God's presence, leading, and love in their everyday lives.

"Hope from Ashes" Conference

Please register now for the virtual May 13-14 2022 Asian American Theology Conference titled “Hope from Ashes: Lessons and Legacies from the Los Angeles Riots.” This year we take the thirty-year anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots as a point of departure to examine the intersection of race, class, protest, and religion for Asian American and African American communities. This is an important opportunity to hear from leading public intellectuals and community leaders from both the Asian American and African American communities. We have also incorporated throughout our conference schedule time for small group discussions hosted virtually. It is our desire that these virtual small groups facilitate mutual understanding and relationship. Registration is free.

Mental Health and Asian Americans

In the afternoon, we will feature different selections of practical workshops on topics such as mental health and spirituality, conflict resolution, wholeness and perfectionism, and active listening skills. These workshops are led by Rev. Dr. Jin Lee, Rev. Dr. Eunbee Ham, Dr. Joel Jin, and Dr. Samuel Kim.

Venue: New Life Fellowship
             8210 Queens Blvd

How we disciple (train, admonish, instruct) youth matters. It matters to them, to their parents, to the church, and - more than anything else - it matters to the Lord. As youth leaders, we need to continue to think about what it means to effectively engage with our youth. To that end, we are going to gather to hear some content from Binu Thomas (a seasoned veteran) on young adult discipleship, spend some time talking about it, and then look at a handful of resources.

Sponsored by: Ross Queener of Cru, in partnership with Binu Thomas (Youth Pastor, Great Neck Community Church) and Matt Mano (Youth Pastor, New Life Fellowship).

                                                                                                   NAVIGATING CHURCH CULTURES

Why do English speaking pastors generally choose not to stay too long at one church? What is the attraction of parachurch ministries? What makes for such difference in leadership styles between Americans and Asians? This session explains the underlying cultural motivation that shapes these differences and how we can biblically address these differences.  Part of the seminar will address how Asian cultural practices are influenced by Asian religions (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism) and the honor/shame dynamic.

Audience: This seminar is for pastors and full-time ministry workers only. To attend the Thursday session register (HERE). Note: PaLM NY/NJ Co-Workers can register via this link, or upon receipt of their bi-monthly Co-Worker's invitation scheduled to arrive in early April.

Speakers: Walt Larimore MD and William C. Peel ThM
Topic:
Have you ever prescribed grace to your patients? Not just kindness, which is important, but also specific and appropriate doses of grace that may bring your patients a step closer to a right relationship with God? Many Christian healthcare professionals struggle with guilt and inadequacy in this area. But there is hope. This live seminar is designed to teach  medical professionals to share their faith with patients in ways that safeguard the importance of ethical principles of respect, sensitivity and permission. Originally taught in CMDA’s popular Saline Solution course, these concepts are proven to be effective as thousands of lives have been transformed. Grace Prescriptions builds on this legacy.
Immediately after the seminar participants are invited to join a dinner fellowship where they will hear Dr. David Kim, CEO of Beacon CCHC, speak on Christ-centered Urban healthcare.
