Thriving Immigrant Church Initiative (TICI)
Posted February 11, 2023
Prof. Peter Cha of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) is now accepting applications for the second cohort of TICI, which will last for two years (2024-25). Participants of the first initiative include the Rev. Nathan Hieb of Monmouth Community Christian Church and the Rev. Paul Shen of Chinese Christian Church of NJ. Both pastors and churches have benefitted greatly by their participation in the program. Nathan's thoughts of the TICI program is outlined in this following paragraph.
TICI has benefitted my church by strengthening the relationships between our first and second generations. Our participation in TICI has given our leaders an opportunity to reflect on cultural issues in our church, some that uniquely equip and bless our church and others that cause frustration among our different generations and cultures. A particularly useful activity was our first assignment, which was to conduct listening sessions among different generation groups in our church. What emerged was a picture of our strengths and weaknesses, many of which were unspoken or inadequately acknowledged up to this point. Because this was part of a larger initiative, and because we are experiencing TICI with a cohort of eleven other churches, we had a greater sense of freedom and empowerment to discuss, and seek solutions for, some of our cultural issues that previously appeared intractable. I highly recommend TICI, and I'm available to answer questions that any churches have about this experience. (I'm writing this after our first year in TICI. During our second year, we'll focus on improving our outreach beyond our dominant ethnicities within our local community).
Anyone wishing to ask Nathan any questions about the program can contact him via this EMAIL.
Paul adds that (1) only medium to large size churches should participate in the program and (2) only if the church as two or three congregations that want to develop more unity with each other. If the Immigrant First Generation Pastor/Elder does not want to invest their time into giving equal voice and political power to their second-generation EM Pastor, then they should not participate.
Anyone wishing to ask Paul any questions about the program can contact him via this EMAIL.

Thriving Immigrant Congregations Initiative
RE-Posted May 6, 2021
A few months ago, the Hiebert Center for World Christianity and Global Theology (of TEDS) received a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment to launch a five-year project called "Thriving Immigrant Congregations Initiative" (TICI). This project aims to form a learning community of 15 immigrant congregations that would address the following two significant challenges many are facing: (1) developing an effective and lasting partnership between first-generation leaders/members and their second-generation counterparts, and (2) serving and reaching out to their surrounding communities, including those that are beyond their ethnic boundaries. A copy of the TICI application packet that offers a fuller description of this pilot project can be found in the below pdf packet.
For this first cohort learning community, those congregations that are located in the Midwest and East Coast regions of the U.S. are targeted. Interested congregations should indicate their intent via "Intent Form" by May 31st. And submission of the the full application should be completed via "Full Application" by June 30th.

Are you a pastoral staff member at a Chinese church in North America who primarily ministers in English? Would you like to help with a study that can boost the health of Chinese churches in America?
If so, please take a few minutes to complete the survey at the link below. Each completed survey will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift code.
SURVEY LINK
There is no obligation to participate, but your help would be greatly appreciated. The absolute maximum time your participation will take is 15-20 minutes. The survey itself will take about 5-10 minutes. If you are unfamiliar with your Myers-Briggs personality temperament, it may take an additional 10 minutes.
Your answers will be confidential and will be grouped with all others who respond in order to draw some general conclusions about the correlation between a long ministry tenure and Myers-Briggs (Kiersey) personality temperament.
Please forward this message to other English-speaking ministers at Chinese American churches. Youth and children's ministers are eligible, as long as they primarily minister in English.
Thank you very much!
