English Ministry Pastor
|
Full-Time
Church Description
Table Church is the "re-planted" English ministry of Chinese Conservative Baptist Church. We have around 40-50 consistent attendees; primarily Asian Americans with a mix of diversity.
Ministry Position Description
Our vision is to experience the presence of God through the presence of family. Our three core values are: Family with God, Family with Church, Family with Neighbors. We are a church based in Chinatown/Lower East Side, New York City. We are called “The Table Church” because we value the horizontal experience of faith, just as much as the vertical relationship we share with God. On a typical Sunday service, people will sit at tables and the pastor will create time for discussion because we believe in peer discipleship and the importance of building authentic connections in a faith community. The vast majority of our church serves on a team, including hospitality, marketing, prayer, or tech. We’ve invested into our weekly small groups and have even done mini groups of three people for a deeper connection. Understanding our post-Christendom environment in NYC, we’ve prioritized creating faith spaces for the unchurched, deconstructed, as well as seekers, and have created a curriculum based on topics they care about.
To reach our neighborhood, we have distributed food to our low-income neighbors, hosted free garage shares, and have given free polaroid pictures to local families. To develop relationships with our friends, we have held holiday parties, “church in the park” picnics, and hosted “Coffee House” events with local musicians. We also know the top importance of cultivating sacred spaces for people to meet with Jesus. To foster that, we have sponsored quarterly worship nights, carried out 2-3 retreats a year, and held weekly prayer meetings. There is a lot of freedom and creativity at our church! “Table Church” exists as the English ministry within the context of “Chinese Conservative Baptist Church,” planted back in 1959 by missionaries who sought after Chinese restaurant workers with the gospel. Back in 2021, we legally added “Table Church” as our church name to be more welcoming to more people.
The Chinese and English ministries share space and resources with each other and have recently pushed for more cultural unity and teamwork, especially when reaching the younger generation. The English pastor, Chinese pastor, and church administrator meet every week to pray, laugh, care for each other, and discuss overall church plans. This is an exciting time to join in the life of our church. Over the past few years, we’ve developed a solid base of 40 attendees each week, who are primarily college-educated young adult professionals and are mostly Asian-American. We are hoping to become more multigenerational and multiethnic to accurately reflect the neighborhood we serve, which is a mix of young adult professionals, Chinatown families, and NYCHA Housing residents.
